Constituent Department under College of Agriculture

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying was established since the inception of College of Agriculture, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat. The department is invovled in teaching undergraduate degree programmes of the College of Agriculture, College of Sericulture and College of Community Science. In addition to offering theory and practical courses, the Department maintains two fully functional instructional farms, namely the Instructional Livestock and the Instructional Poultry Farm.The Instructional Livestock farm comprises a dairy unit, pig unit, Murrah buffalo unit, goat unit and rabbit unit. The Instructional Poultry farm includes a cage layer unit for table egg production, parent breeding units of dual purpose chicken breeds such as Vanaraja, Srinidhi, Kamrupa and Rainbow Rooster, an intensive pigeon unit, quail unit, duck unit and a hatchery unit. Both instructional farms produce and supply fresh, high quality farm products such as milk, curd, table eggs and meat (chicken, duck, pigeon, pork and chevon). The Department also supplies quality piglets and goat kids to farmers across Assam and other North Eastern states. In addition, we are also providing quality dual-purpose chicks, ducklings, quails, guineafowls and turkey poults to the farmers.The Department also maintains an integrated farming model along with fodder cultivation to support teaching, research and extension activities. It is actively engaged in teaching, research and extension programmes, including farmer training programmes, farmer-scientist interaction programmes, livestock and poultry vaccination programmes and student internship programmes of different general colleges. We also have one vermicompost unit where we produced quality vermicompost and farm yard manure.Through its integrated approach to teaching, research, extension and technology dissemination, the Department plays a significant role in developing skill human resources, enhancing livestock productivity, strengthening farmer livelihood and promoting sustainable agricultural development in Assam and the North Eastern Region of India.
