Regulations on Academic Matters (Amended), 2025
Assam Agricultural University follows a semester-based academic system for its undergraduate programmes governed by the Regulations on Academic Matters (Amended), 2025. These regulations govern admission, enrolment, course registration, attendance, examination, continuous evaluation, academic progression, student discipline, merit scholarships, and the formal award of bachelor's degrees across all constituent faculties.
The regulations apply to all candidates seeking admission to and enrolled in the University. The academic year ordinarily extends from August to July and is divided into two regular semesters.
The academic curriculum aligns with national educational standards and ICAR guidelines, fostering holistic education, critical thinking, problem-solving, entrepreneurship, and hands-on professional competence.
Constituent Faculties, Degree Durations, and Course Structure
The University offers rigorous undergraduate degree programmes across diverse agricultural, allied science, and professional faculties:
The B.Sc. (Hons.) and B.F.Sc. programmes are normally completed in eight semesters (4 academic years), with a maximum permissible duration of fourteen semesters (7 academic years). The B.V.Sc. & A.H. programme is governed substantially by the applicable Veterinary Council of India (VCI) Minimum Standards of Veterinary Education Regulations.
The academic curriculum incorporates core courses, elective courses, Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC), approved online courses, practical and experiential learning, internship, and Student READY activities. Students admitted to the relevant four-year programmes are required to complete at least 10 credits through approved online courses (such as SWAYAM/MOOCs).
Selection Process, Eligibility Criteria, and Mandatory Requirements
Admission to all undergraduate programmes is conducted strictly in accordance with eligibility guidelines approved by the Academic Council and notified in the annual University Information Bulletin. Applications are submitted online through the AAU admissions portal, and selection is made strictly on merit based on qualifying criteria.
Final admission is contingent upon production of original documents, medical fitness verification, submission of required undertakings, and payment of the prescribed semester fees within the stipulated time.
Working Days, Credit Load, and Academic Oversight
Each academic semester comprises a minimum of 110 working days, consisting of 95 instructional days and 15 dedicated examination days.
| Component | Definition / Standard Equivalent | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Theory Credit | 1 Credit = 50 minutes of lecture instruction per week per semester | Calculated over a minimum of 16 weeks |
| Practical Credit | 1 Credit = 2 hours (120 minutes) of laboratory / field practical work per week | Hands-on experimental & field training |
| Maximum Credit Load | Normally up to 25 credits per semester | Subject to Dean's approval for repeaters |
| Curriculum Authority | Board of Studies & Academic Council | Periodic syllabus revisions as per ICAR BSMA |
National Education Policy (NEP) Alignment & Progression Pathways
In accordance with the progressive provisions of the Regulations, undergraduate students may opt for multiple entry and exit points during their academic journey:
Awarded an Undergraduate Certificate (UG Certificate) in the relevant discipline, subject to successful completion of all coursework and a mandatory 10-week summer internship carrying 10 credits.
Awarded an Undergraduate Diploma (UG Diploma) in the relevant discipline, subject to successful completion of all coursework and a mandatory 10-week internship carrying 10 credits.
Owing to the highly specialized professional and technical nature of agricultural degree programmes, no exit qualification is offered after the third year. Completion of the full four years leads to the conferment of the respective Bachelor's Degree.
Minimum Attendance Standards, Shortages, and Permissible Grounds
Regular attendance in classes and field practicals is mandatory. Students must maintain a minimum attendance of 75% separately in the theory and practical components of every registered course.
Quizzes, Mid-Term, End-Term Examinations, and 10-Point Scale
Academic performance is evaluated through continuous internal assessment and formal semester-end examinations:
Performance is expressed on a 10-point scale via Grade Point Average (GPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). A minimum CGPA of 5.50 out of 10.00, along with successful clearance of all prescribed courses and removal of all 'F' (Fail) grades, is mandatory for graduation.
Remedial Provisions, Retest Opportunities, and Honors
Students who fall below the requisite academic benchmarks are placed on Academic Probation. The regulations provide structured opportunities for Grade Improvement and Repeat Examinations:
Rural Entrepreneurship Awareness Development Yojana (READY)
The Student READY programme is an essential, high-impact pillar of undergraduate education at AAU, purposefully designed to instill practical farm skills, entrepreneurship, rural immersion, and industry-grade competencies.

Counsellors monitor academic progress, assist with course selection, address personal or logistical hurdles, and maintain cumulative mentorship records. A faculty-level Undergraduate Students' Counselling Committee oversees the system.
High standards of ethical conduct and discipline are expected across campuses, hostels, libraries, and university vehicles. Misconduct, examination fraud, or hostel indiscipline entails severe penalties.
Mobile phones are strictly prohibited inside classrooms and examination halls. Ragging in any form is completely prohibited with zero tolerance, punishable by criminal prosecution and immediate rustication.
Assam Agricultural University offers competitive Merit Scholarships to outstanding students based on academic rank and semester performance. Continued receipt requires good conduct, unblemished discipline, regular progression, and a minimum academic achievement of GPA 7.00 or above on the 10-point scale.
