Social Science

The Department of Social Science under the College of Horticulture and Farming System Research, Assam Agricultural University, was established in 2014 with the objective of strengthening the social science dimensions of agricultural education, research, and extension. At present, the Department comprises two major disciplines: Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Extension Education.

The Department plays an active and significant role in the teaching, research, and extension activities of the College. Through its academic programmes, the Department provides students with knowledge and skills related to agricultural economics, farm management, agricultural marketing, rural development, agricultural communication, extension methodologies, entrepreneurship, and other socio-economic aspects of agriculture and horticulture.

The Department is also actively engaged in research addressing contemporary issues in agriculture and horticulture, including farmers’ livelihoods, agricultural marketing, value chains, technology adoption, entrepreneurship, rural development, and socio-economic development. In addition, it contributes to extension and community-oriented activities by facilitating the dissemination of improved agricultural technologies, knowledge, and innovations among farmers and other stakeholders.

Through its integrated efforts in teaching, research, and extension, the Department strives to contribute to the sustainable development of agriculture and horticulture and to the socio-economic empowerment of farming communities in Assam and beyond.
