The agriculture sector of North-East India is vibrant and contributes immensely towards the region's overall economic development and the livelihood security of the farming community. Likewise, agriculture is the backbone of Assam's economy, as it remains a primary source of livelihood, food security, and rural employment for a large section of the population. Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Jorhat, being a premier institute of North-East India primarily focused on achieving excellence in agricultural education, research and extension, has remained steadfast in its commitment towards advancing agricultural science, developing competent human resources and improving the livelihoods of farming communities across Assam, apart from fulfilling the national and international perspectives since inception.

In an era characterised by climate change, diminishing natural resources, evolving market demands and rapid technological advancement, AAU has been able to develop innovative, sustainable and location-specific technologies, enhance agricultural productivity, strengthen food and nutritional security, promote entrepreneurship and improve rural prosperity in the state. AAU has been serving a pivotal role in addressing the issues of household nutritional security, farmers' distress, commerce in agriculture, as well as global food crises through innovative technology generation and extension activities.

Guided by its threefold mandate of education, research and extension, AAU strives to integrate academic excellence in alignment with the National Education Policy 2020 with scientific discovery and societal relevance. AAU has been strengthening multidisciplinary education, promoting cutting-edge research, fostering national and international collaborations, encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship, and accelerating digital transformation in agriculture. AAU has been prioritizing activities in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, precision agriculture, biotechnology, climate-smart agriculture, advanced food processing and knowledge management for a technologically advanced, globally competitive and socially responsive institution.

Through its constituent colleges, zonal research stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras, AAU continues to develop skilled professionals, generate need-based technologies and facilitate effective dissemination of agricultural technologies for inclusive agricultural development in the entire region. I sincerely believe that the collective effort, dedication and commitment of students, researchers, farmers, entrepreneurs, policymakers and all the stakeholders, including collaborating institutions, could help in building resilient, sustainable and knowledge-driven agriculture in the near future.
