Dr. Lakshmi Singh Negi took over the charge of Vice-Chancellor, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat w.e.f. 01-06-72 to 10.06.77. Born on September 18, 1913 in Chini Village of Kinnaur District of Himachal Pradesh, Dr. Negi graduated and post graduated (Master’s degree) in Agriculture from the Punjab University, Lahore with gold medal and making University record. He obtained Ph.D. degree from Minnesota, USA. Before joining Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, Dr. Negi served many institutions in different positions such as Economic Botanist of Cereals, Cotton and Oilseeds, Government of Punjab (August 1953 to January 1957); Director of Agriculture, Himachal Pradesh (January 1957 to April 1963); Dean, College of Agriculture, Punjab  Agricultural University (April 1963 to March 1964); Director of Agriculture cum Additional Commissioner for Agricultural Production, Himachal Pradesh (April 1964 to March 1968); Vice- Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Viswa Vidyalaya, Jabalpur (March 1968 to May1972). In addition to the above, he acted as Member/President/ Chairman of about 8 numbers of committees/ bodies of education and research mostly in ICAR. He has about 46 scientific papers to his credit. Dr. Negi extensively toured the world over. He visited the USA (four times), Federal republic of Germany, Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Holland, Sweden and Italy.
