Department of Home Science Extension Education
 

          The departmentof Home Science Extension Education fulfills three mandates of the A.A.U. i.e., teaching, research and extension which are given in details as below:

Teaching:

          The department has been offering both P.G. and U.G. courses for qualifying the students with the following objectives:
  • Ability to plan extension programme using scientific methods, to execute the planned programme where theend results can be seen and measured through scientific evaluation.
  • Skill of preparing different audio visual aids using modern techniques.
  • Ability to communicale with different individuals and groups of diversified set-up through verbal, audio visual and A/V aids.
  • Applying scientifaic process for critical analysis of sthe various development programme.
  • Organising short term and long term extension training programmes for different target groups (women and children).

The department started offering elective courses at undergraduate level from 1982. Post graduate programme in Home science extension education started from Feb. 1998.

Research:

The first phase of All India Co-ordinated Research Project on "Data base on rural women" sanctioned by ICAR in VIII Five Year plan is in progress withan objective to study the work profile ofrural women in terms oftheir involvement andtime use pattern in farming and homestead activities for comprehensive data base at national level.

Under non projectfaculty research the department has completed four research projects in the areas of adult education, family welfare and home management. Presently two research projects, one on "A study of the learning environment including availability and use of different teaching methods and aids in selected high schools of Jorhat district" and other on "Standardization of information needs of farm women related to home and farm" is going on under non project faculty research. Further the department has selected women in agriculture, communication and curriculum development as the areas of post graduate research.

Extension:

A number of extension activities have been undertaken since 1980 in the areas like adult educations, scriculture, poultry farming, kitchen garden, improved chullah, rural sanitation, entreprencural development etc. Further the department conducted the following activities under specific extension projects.
  • Channelising the potentialities of children of pre-school age through various techniques (games, sports, rhymes, drawing, painting, music etc.).
  • Motivation and knowledge to pregnant mothers and maintenance of their children.
  • Developing skill in mothers to construct childrens’ garments.
  • Improvement of the existing kitchens in rural families to minimise the use of human resources to earn leisure time as well as to reduce the health hazards caused through defective kitchen.
  • Motivating the rural women towards nutrition garden at home level through scientific kinchen gardening so tha the health status of the family can be improved.

The department conducted the TRYSEM project during the years 1992-93 and 1993-94 wherein doll making, clothing construction, food preservation and carpet weaving were the trades disseminated.
