Animal husbandry in Dhemaji

Information on population, production and productivity of livestock commodities


Livestock is an important enterprise of the district. The population of milch cows is 44.38% of the total livestock and followed by pigs (34.35%), goats (13.64%) and buffaloes (7.64%). Population of milch cows has increased to 20.13% by 2005 in comparison to 1970 and goats by 311.66% while the population of buffaloes has remained static over the last 35 years except some minor increase or decrease in years. The production of cow’s milk has sown an increase of 39.76% while the production of buffalo’s milk has decreased 14.58 by 2006 in comparison to 1970. The production of meat of goats has increased 34.53%, meat of pigs 35.50%, meat of poultry and duckery together has recorded an increase of 260%. Production of eggs of both poultry and duckery has increased 305% during the year 2006 in comparison to the production level of 1970. This has been become possible either due to the increase in population particularly of cows in increase in productivity especially in case of meat and egg production of goat, pigs, poultry and duckery.
