   1.         Success story on Nursery business

Horticultural nursery has tremendous potentiality as an enterprise in Cachar district. Few peoples also have established nursery in this zone. But their businesses were not run well. The main reasons were unskilled person and lack of motivation towards nursery as an enterprise. Therefore, the KVK, Cachar, in collaboration with the Deptt. of Agriculture organized a special 6 days training programmes for those private nursery men. The main objectives of the training were to provide skill and knowledge to the participants and to give information regarding source of quality planting materials. Mr. Subrata Chakraborty, a college dropout of village Jhapirbond, Cachar was one of the participants in the training. He also established a nursery in 1988. It was the only source of income for his family. He started the nursery in 5 bighs of land. But his business was also not running well as expected since he was an unskilled person in nursery. Therefore, he also participated in the said training.

After taking part in this 6 days training programme on horticultural nursery, Mr. Chakraborty became a skilled and well informed person on nursery. After that he reorganized his nursery scientifically and planted different types of quality mother plants. He started to produce various planting materials of fruits, flowers, medicinal and aromatic plants, saplings of agro-forestry etc. He sells his output to retail sellers at Silchar town. He also supplies the planting materials to the Deptt. of Agriculture. His nursery was registered under Deptt. of Agriculture. For improving his marketing skill, he has undergone another training on marketing for rural entrepreneur at KVK, Cachar. Mr. Chakraborty had also received Rs. 2.00 lac from Deptt. of Agriculture under Technology Mission. In his nursery he presently employed four permanent labours and few casual labours. His monthly turnover is Rs. 18000.00 (approx.) with a net profit of Rs. 10000.00 per month (approx.). Now his nursery is a grand success for him and his family is living peacefully depending on the income of the nursery.

Text Box: Mr. Biswajit Roy during harvesting of honey
Initially Mr. Roy being a school drop out in 1996 could not wake up his mind what to do and what not. During 1998 he came to KVK, Cachar, Arunachal and requested for some advice so that he could earn some amount to support his family. At that time a training was organized at Directorate of Extension Education, AAU, Jorhat-13 on apiculture and he was sent to take that training. After completing the training he also got a box for rearing honey bee. On returning home he collected a hive and started rearing but unfortunately the bee hive was flown away after few months. After this, he got dishearten and for about a year ran here and there looking for a job. As he could not manage a job upto2000, again he started rearing honey bee and this time he became successful in it. This success led him to increase the number of colonies to get more honey as there is a good demand in this area. At present he has 10 bee hives of Indian honey bee in ten boxes and gets 6 kg of honey on an average per year from each bee hive. He sells this honey in the local market at Rs. 300-350 per kg and earns around Rs. 18000.00 to 21000.00 in a year and thus supporting his father in maintaining the family. Besides honey bee he is growing oyster mushroom and has a small nursery of flower and vegetable where from also he earns a handsome amount of money.
