Department of Veterinary Pathology acts as a bridge between the basic Veterinary Sciences and the clinical veterinary sciences. The Department of Veterinary Pathology plays a major role in disease diagnosis since inception. Major animals included livestock, pet, poultry, wild life, zoo animal etc. The basic diagnostic techniques involved are necropsy and histopathological techniques with various special staining methods. The confirmatory diagnosis of disease is assisted by molecular pathology, clinical and biochemical pathology, primary bacteriological isolation and identification have been conducted in the intra departmental laboratories etc.
The Department of Pathology was established in the erstwhile Assam Veterinary College as the Department of Pathology and Bacteriology in 1949. The M.V.Sc degree programme in Vety. Pathology was started 1974. In the year 1975, the Department was bifurcated into two independent departments i.e. the Department of Pathology and the Department of Microbiology. In 1986, the Ph.D. programme was started. So far the Department has completed three (3) Research projects funded by different agencies like ICAR, CIFE & CIFRI and ASTEC, Assam. A total of 81 numbers of PG students (65 MVSc. and 16 PhD students) completed their degree programmes. At present, 10 M.V.Sc. and 1 Ph.D students persuing their degree. There are total eight (8) teaching staff working in the Department out of which two (2) faculty members are attached with Teaching Veterinary Complex (TVC).
1. To provide the continous improvement of the quality education in the discipline of Pathology, research and extension services to became a centre of excellence in the state in particular and NE region in general.
a) To provide excellent, innovative and quality education to students.
b) To improve the laboratory facilities with modern and technologically sound tools and equipments for better diagnostic- services and quality research.
c) To develop a congenial relationship with the farming communities and stakeholders by offering consultation services for treatment and preventive measures against the infectious diseases of livestock and poultry.
To strengthen the department both in terms of infrastructure and man-power in order to develop the centre of excellence in education, research and extension services of the University.
