The Assam Agricultural University is a Premier University in the North-East-India engaged in teaching, research and extension activities of Agricultural and Allied Sciences. At present the university has four faculties viz. Agriculture, Veterinary, Home Science and Fisheries with six constituent colleges. To cater the needs of trained personnel in biotechnology, a Post-graduate Degree Programme in Agricultural Biotechnology, funded by the Department of biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India, started functioning since February 1989. With increasing use of computers in biological sciences, it was felt necessary to establish a bioinformatics centre at this university. Accordingly a proposal was sent to DBT, Govt. of India for providing necessary funds to start a bioinformatics sub-centre at this University, which was finally approved and sanctioned by the DBT. As per the MOU between the University and DBT, necessary space and other infrastructural facilities were provided by the University, while DBT has provided funds for the staff salary and computers and accessories. The centre is at present located in the Department of Agricultural Biotechnology and providing support to teachers, scientists, research workers, administrators, officers and students not only of Assam but also the other states of North East India.
